  2. NIOS same NOS

Is NOS the other name for NIOS Board ?

In July 2002, NIOS was upgraded to function as a national apex body for Open Schooling in the country. It was given a new name, the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), and also a new mandate to provide relevant continuing education at school stage up to the pre-degree (secondary and senior secondary) level through the Open Distance Learning System as an alternative to the formal system and to prioritized client groups, in pursuance of the normative national policy documents and in response to the needs assessment of the clients, and thus to make its contribution to:

• The evolution of a learning society.
• Universalisation of education, and
• Greater equity and justice in society

As an apex body, while continuing to function as an open school itself, NIOS functions as a resource organisation for all the States and Union Territories in the country. Besides material support, it arranges consultancy and advocacy programmes for them.

The NIOS was set up with the mission of universalization of education, enhancing social equity and justice and creating a learning society. It aims to reach out to a prioritized client group, which includes school drop-outs and marginalized groups, namely rural youth, urban poor, girls and women, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, the handicapped and ex-servicemen. The NOS gives employed adults who are keen to improve their educational level, a chance to move upward in their jobs.

-Providing relevant, continuing and holistic education up to pre-degree level through Open and Distance Learning System. -Contributing to the Universalisation of School Education.

-Catering to the educational needs of the prioritized target groups for equity and social justice.

The NOS provides the following Courses/Programs of Study through open and distance learning (ODL) mode:

(i) Open Basic Education (OBE) Program for 14+ year age group, adolescents and adults at A, B and C levels that are equivalent to classes III, V and VIII of the formal school system.
(ii) Secondary Education Course.
(iii) Senior Secondary Education Course.
(iv) Vocational Education Courses/Programs.
(v) Life Enrichment Programs.

The credit transfers between formal schooling and NOS schools were established. The certificates awarded by NOS to its students after qualifying in secondary and senior secondary examinations have been recognized by various universities for admission to higher courses. NOS also created an innovative examination procedure: students can take 9 examinations over a five year period at any time. Students can retake examinations to upgrade credit levels so they are eligible for certification. Women and members of scheduled castes/ scheduled tribes pay reduced fees.
